FAQs
Q: Do I need to sterilize the jars before using them?
Ans: Yes, for the best results and food safety, it’s recommended to sterilize the jars and lids before each use. You can boil them for a few minutes or use a dishwasher with a high-temperature cycle.
Q: Is the GAIA yogurt maker ready to use straight out of the box?
Ans: Almost. Before first use, clean the jars, lids, and base, and perform a test run to familiarize yourself with the settings.
Q: What type of milk can I use in the GAIA?
Ans: You can use cow’s milk (whole, semi-skimmed, or skimmed), goat’s milk, or plant-based alternatives like soy or almond. Note that non-dairy milks may need thickeners for a firmer result.
Q: What is a “starter culture” and how much do I need?
Ans: A starter culture is a live probiotic (either in the form of plain yogurt or freeze-dried bacteria) that ferments the milk. You typically need 1–2 tablespoons of plain yogurt with live cultures per liter of milk.
Q: How long does the yogurt take to ferment?
Ans: Incubation usually takes 8 to 12 hours, depending on the milk type, starter used, and desired consistency. Longer times produce a tangier flavor.
Q: Can I make flavored yogurt directly in the jars?
Ans: It’s best to add fruits, sweeteners, or flavorings after fermentation. Adding them before may disrupt the culturing process.
Q: Can I reuse yogurt from a previous batch as a starter?
Ans: Yes! Use fresh, unflavored yogurt from your last batch (within 5–7 days). After about 4–5 cycles, it’s best to start with a new culture for optimal results.
